Review: Flip Mino HD vs Kodak Zi8 vs iMac webcam

One of the most frequent question I get is:

What video camera should I use to create videos for my website or video blog?

I used to always recommend using the Flip Mino HD … but that was until I got the Kodak Zi8 …

In this video not only do I give you a review of both the Flip Mino HD and the Kodak Zi8, I also share when I use each of those cameras, and when I just use my iMac webcam.

    I bought the Flip Mino, but I’ve been less-than-overwhelmed by the sound quality. Wish I’d gotten the Zi8.

    Thanks, Elizabeth! You’ve just confirmed that I made the right decision. I bought a Zi8 after seeing how good it looks in one of the clips on the Fearless Karaoke video that @NataliePeluso made. Gonna make my first video today – wish me luck!

    Thank you very much Elisabeth for this review. I’m looking to buy an HD camera but I don’t know if I should go with a portable or a bigger one with a better mic integrated, zoom and flash light. I don’t either which one to go with. I have an iPhone 4 and the video quality is amazing so I’m wondering if I really should buy a portable HD camera or go with the big one. Any suggestion? I’d like to do video to my blog too :)

      Depends upon how committed you are to video. If you *know* you will be doing tons of video blogs (and it will be tied to you making money) then getting the bigger camera may make sense. But really … when you uplevel you may want a *really* fancy camera as opposed to something mid range anyway.

      For most people a portable is best to start (you’ll want that sometimes anyway) and then you can always uplevel to fancy later. Eventually I will be getting a bigger camera with more complex lenses, with a sound board and better mics. (I already have fancy lights that I will start using soon).

    Thanks for the review, Elizabeth. I have the Flip HD, but this tells me I might need to pick up a Zi8 for the external mic capability. I often record video testimonials after I speak, and the sound quality (with all the background noise at a conference) has been an issue for me.What mic to you recommend?
