Nathalie Lussier, founder of AmbitionAlly, has been an EPW General Counsel client for a few years. I’ve known Nathalie for a long time, watching her expand from a raw foods expert into the founder & CEO of a software company! Here are some fun facts about her:
Were you born an entrepreneur?
I definitely feel like I was born an entrepreneur. I grew up coming up with ideas to create “win win” systems… For example, I loved reading fiction books as a kid, so I started a lending library where my friends could pay a quarter to borrow a book, and I used the money to buy more books for all of us to read.
I also used to write stories and collect my friends’ stories into a magazine or newsletter that I would design and print, and resell back to my friends and family. I also designed web sites in high school, as a side business.
What color, sound, or smell helps you be calm and productive?
I have a favorite essential oil blend called “Calm” by Vibrant Blue Oils that I put into a spray bottle diluted with water and it works like a charm! Just one spritz and I’m feeling zen. I also really love the colors I picked for my office: purple for the walls and green for my chair… it feels royal and like I’m in nature at the same time.
What is your favorite business book, and why?
The Pumpkin Plan by Michael Mikalowicz. It’s a simple concept or analogy, that you can grow an incredible business by applying the principles necessary for growing large pumpkins. What I love the most about it is that it’s sound advice that works in any business, it’s easy to understand and apply, and if you follow the advice then you can get great results.
If you could have coffee with any business person (dead or alive), whom would you pick?
Cleopatra. I know she’s not a modern business person, but I feel like her advice for growing a business would stem from real life experience that’s priceless. She was able to partner with strong allies, and ward off people who were out to get her, too. I also feel like she would have some great stories and ideas for being a woman leader in a man’s world, without losing your sense of sensuality and surrender.
What’s the weirdest or most surprising skill you possess?
After taking the Strengths Finder test, I discovered that I’m very competitive and empathic. I think that’s a weird but powerful combination. It means that I am really motivated by being my best and by winning against my competition. It also means that I really understand how the other people feel, so I’m not mean about it. I use these skills in my business every day to motivate myself and my team to achieve greatness, and to connect with my customers and peers on a human level with empathy. It’s been a winning combination!
